Woven labels vs printed labels: which does your brand need?
A plain comparison of woven and printed clothing labels — how each is made, how they feel, how they wear, and which suits brand labels, care labels and hang tags.
If you're ordering labels for a clothing brand for the first time, the choice between woven and printed is the first real decision you'll make. It changes how your label looks, how it feels, and how it holds up after fifty washes. Here's the honest comparison.
How each one is made
A woven label is made on a loom. Coloured threads are woven together so that your logo, brand name and text emerge from the weave itself. The design isn’t applied to the fabric — the design is the fabric. That’s the whole distinction, and everything else follows from it.
A printed label starts with a base material — usually satin, cotton tape or a synthetic ribbon — and the design is printed onto it with ink. The material is made first; the design goes on top afterwards.
How they feel and look
Run your thumb over a woven label and you can feel the threads. There’s a slight texture and a subtle depth where the colours change. It’s the finish most people associate with established retail clothing, because that’s what established retail clothing uses.
A printed label is flat and smooth. The surface is uniform, and the design sits on it. Neither is "better" in the abstract — but they read differently, and customers pick up on it even when they can’t name what they noticed.
The short version: woven feels made. Printed feels applied.
Which handles your logo better
Thread has a minimum thickness, so there’s a floor on how fine a woven detail can go. Hairline strokes, very small serif type and thin outlines may need simplifying at label size. In exchange, what does get woven stays crisp — edges are defined by where one thread ends and another begins.
Printing can reproduce gradients, photographic imagery and extremely fine lines that thread cannot. If your logo depends on a photographic element or a soft gradient blend, printing handles it more faithfully.
Most brand marks — a wordmark, a monogram, a simple icon — weave well. A focused palette, generally around 10 to 12 thread colours, covers most logos and text cleanly. Send us your artwork and we’ll tell you exactly how it translates before you commit to anything.
How they wear
Because a woven design is built into the threads, normal washing and drying doesn’t lift it off the material — there’s no printed layer to crack or peel, and the colours are the threads themselves.
Printed labels vary more with the print method and base material. Some printing holds up well; some shows wear on the printed surface over repeated washing. If your garment is washed often, that difference matters.
Which to use where
| Where it goes | Usually | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Neck / brand label | Woven | It’s the label a customer sees and touches first. |
| Side-seam tab | Woven | Visible on the outside; the texture is part of the look. |
| Size label | Woven | Short text, needs to stay legible for the life of the garment. |
| Care label | Either | Woven lasts; printing fits more small text in less space. |
| Hang tag | Woven | Read at arm’s length on the rail; texture carries. |
| Photographic artwork | Printed | Gradients and photo detail don’t translate into thread. |
How to choose
Ask three questions:
- Where does the label sit? If a customer will see or touch it, woven usually wins.
- What does your logo contain? Solid shapes and type weave well. Photographs and gradients don’t.
- How often is the garment washed? The more washing, the more the woven construction earns its place.
If you’re still unsure, send us the logo. We’ll tell you how it would come out in thread — including if we think printing suits your artwork better.
